I have a track record of working hard for people – and achieving results. I helped start up Luton’s film festival, starting with nothing but a lot of ambition and a belief in doing something better in Luton. I have taught at Luton Sixth Form College and I've organised an arts project for young people in Luton.
More recently, for the past five years, I have worked for Save the Children, the world’s biggest independent children’s charity. I managed activities to raise awareness and lobby governments for their first worldwide campaign, Rewrite the Future, to get a million children into school in poor, wartorn parts of the world from Afghanistan to Darfur. (See the blog I wrote when I worked in Congo.) I know that if change was possible in those places, in Luton we can achieve anything we want – if we all work together.
From my friends and family, I know what it’s like both in small businesses and in the public sector in Luton. My Dad was a teacher for many years at Luton Sixth Form College, my Mum has worked at the University and my brother runs his own small business.
I care deeply that politics is done better and have the experience to prove it. In my early twenties, I contributed to a Parliamentary Commission with MPs from all parties to try to make politics better and more trustworthy. I also helped set up a coalition of young people’s charities to get young people more involved and more represented in politics.
I know how to work with politicians and the media. My work in Save the Children has also helped prepare me for dealing with government and the media , important skills for any MP. My role involved working with colleagues in 50 countries to raise awareness and persuade governments to do more for children. I also recently worked with senior Directors at the BBC to improve impartiality in the BBC’s journalism.
I am good at bringing people together. I have worked with people of many nationalities from around the world. I know that we can only make change for the better by working together. I know we must empower people in our community to make change for themselves. Lutonians know the solutions to our problems. If we work together we can make those solutions a reality.
